Caroline Torres.

Cary is an Associate Professor at Kapi’olani Community College. She teaches an online TESOL teacher education program for in-service teachers and Second Language Teaching classes to pre-service teachers. Her work and interests focus on supporting Multilingual learners, students with disabilities, and Multilingual learners with disabilities, as well as Universal Design for Learning (UDL), place-based education, and digital tools to support learners. 


Cary has also taught writing to college-level language learners and provides professional development for supporting Multilingual Learners to K-12 teachers. In addition, she has taught Multilingual learners in high school, adult education, language schools, and college in the US and K-12 learners with disabilities and middle school students in Japan. She is a founding member and past chair of the Supporting Students with Disabilities TESOL Interest Section. Cary has also co-authored the book, UDL for Language Learners, with Kavita Rao.

Kavita Rao.

Kavita is a Professor of Special Education at the College of Education, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. Her work focuses on digital tools to support learners, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), online learning, and culturally and linguistically diverse students.

 

Kavita is a member of CAST’s Rising to Equity Advisory Board and serves on the advisory board and research committees of the Universal Design for Learning Implementation and Research Network (UDL-IRN). She has supported integration of technology and UDL in  schools and districts in the US, the Pacific islands, and Asia for over two decades. She has worked with educators in Guam, American Samoa, Commonwealth of the Marianas Islands, Palau, Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Federated States of Micronesia developing curriculum resources, multimedia materials, and online programs. Kavita has also collaborated with the International Baccalaureate Organization to support implementation of UDL at IB schools worldwide and with the UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) on the development of a digital pedagogy course for teachers. Kavita has published extensively on the topics of UDL-based instructional design and the use of digital tools and technologies to support learners in K12 and post-secondary environments.
